As The Great War rages in Europe, America’s ability to build airplanes depends on a resource few people think about: spruce. In Oregon’s rugged Coast Range, a U.S. Army logging division works alongside civilian crews to harvest the wood the war effort urgently needs.
Lieutenant Austin Chase, scarred by combat, is reassigned to command the operation and arrives without hope of finding anything in his life worth saving. When a devastating influenza epidemic sweeps through the logging camps, and an aging logger, Charlie Waters, and his daughter draw him into a conflict the Army refuses to acknowledge, Chase is forced to choose between the life the Army expects and the one he actually wants.
