Synopsis

Be encouraged by the faith and perseverance of Christians in Myanmar.

After a military coup took place on February 1, 2021, Myanmar (Burma) was thrown into a deadly tailspin of violence, armed conflict, and war. Until now, more than two million people have been displaced with thousands more arrested, imprisoned, tortured, and killed.

In this book, Myanmar Christians from across the country recount how they have seen God move. Not all of the stories in this book are centered around times of armed conflict, but also include accounts of God’s faithfulness in the ordinary. These authors willingly—at times, adamantly—share their testimonies to worship God, encourage readers, and remind themselves of God’s goodness, even as they face constant suffering, loss, and trauma.

The book’s title, “Desert River,” is a reference to the Bible verse Isaiah 43:19 and seeks to capture the duality of both pain (desert) and provision (river), and the hope in God’s promise to do something new.

This book includes:

  • A brief introduction of Myanmar’s current situation
  • True testimonies of how Christians in Myanmar have seen God’s faithfulness, in both the past and present
  • Quotes and poems from Myanmar believers, and their reflections on God in the midst of pain and suffering, including Bible verses they’ve found strength in
  • Guided opportunities after each story to pray for Myanmar in addition to personal prayer application
  • Reflection questions at the end of each chapter to further process the stories and explore the personal and spiritual application of each chapter’s theme
  • Link to a seven-day prayer guide for Myanmar, written with Myanmar Christians
After reading this book, you can expect to be encouraged by the inspirational faith of Myanmar believers, more informed about Myanmar’s current situation, and better equipped to pray for the country, its people in crisis, and Myanmar Christians. You will also prayerfully explore and reflect on the theme of “desert river” in your own life.

Formatted for personal reading, supplementary devotional reading, and/or short small group reading, it is intentionally compiled with stop points to pray and process through what is happening and how these central themes can apply to one’s self, whether in the East or the West.

This book was curated, edited, and produced by a Myanmar-majority team of eight believers who seek to thank God for his faithfulness and raise prayer and support for communities in Myanmar. All profit from book sales will be sent back to Myanmar for humanitarian assistance to conflict-affected communities.

Praise for Desert River:
“In Desert River, you will find both history and humanity, heartache and hope. The wisdom found in
these stories is hard-won and serves as a reminder that God is at work in the places we sometimes
neglect to look. This is a must read for anyone who has a passion for the global movement of God and
his kingdom.”
—Amanda Held Opelt, author of A Hole in the World: Finding Hope in Rituals of Grief and Healing

“Inspired by God. Penned in faith. Shared for his glory. Please take the time out of your busy life to stop,
read, and breathe in his goodness by soaking up hope, faith, and love from our brothers’ and sisters’
lives in Myanmar.”
—Lisa Wallace (formerly Ennis), co-author of Receiving Them Well
