Synopsis

Dexter Falk is god-touched by Sylvaris—trickster, merchant, thief—and sent wherever the other gods will not dirty their hands. The jobs do not pay. The relics are never safe. The women who walk beside him are specialists, not prizes. One of them finally stays.

The god of thieves demands his help, a woman refuses to be property, and Falk learns the first hard rule of his calling: the job ends, the woman stays behind.

A fortune in spices vanishes from a caravan that already paid the god of thieves his due. The temple took the donative. The wagons still disappeared. Merchant Louis Ugarte hires Dexter Falk—god-touched fixer with a silver tongue, who finds things others cannot.
Posing as a wagoneer on the storm-lashed isthmus road, Falk finds Agatha Voss under a slouch hat: callused hands, a hidden knife, and a past in which she was sold to a monster to save her family. She does not need rescuing. She needs someone who can kill the man who still wants her dead.
The temple needs cleaning and Sylvaris hands Dexter the broom. What begins as an alliance of necessity becomes a passion neither expected—and a first hard lesson in Falk’s calling. His god lent him remarkable women. He will not let him keep this one.
