The Children See Everything is a crime-thriller-coming of age novel that takes place in Orange County, California in 1974. The style is reminiscent of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and writers such as Karl Knaussagaard Ove, Roberto Bolano and Megan Abbott. It explores the themes of male violence inherent in the culture and how it is imbued in boys at an early age, specifically the two boys central to the story, Manuel and Gerald.
Wonderfully written, poignant and authentic. I could taste the sunlight, feel the heat and smell the heady mix of mown grass, home cooking, and dirty, sweaty children. The ugly dark adult world ghouls and boogeymen lurking in the shadows and hiding underneath the bed. Remember that last long bike ride of summer, those tender first kisses and, oh yeah, near misses with the neighborhood murderer? The Children See Everything brings it all back like only yesterday. What a fabulous book. - Bibbe Hansen is a veteran of Warhol’s Silver Factory, performer and poet and author of Factory Poems.
JC Hopkins' terrific novel The Children See Everything, appears at first to be a coming of age, but as the two boys, Manual and Gerald slowly learn of their fathers' secrets it all gradually comes apart. Since both kids are from the families of Mexican immigrants, it's also an American Dream that steadily transforms into the American nightmare. Set during the early 70s in California, when Reagan was Governor and Manson was on trial, this heartbreaking tale of surviving childhood stays with you long after it's over. - Arthur Nersesian, author of The Fuck Up, The Five Books of (Robert) Moses and Shit Show.
The Children See Everything is actually a young boy's tale of SoCal in the early 1970s that takes hard boiled grit and softens it to include a mother's love. It's a genre breaker! - Pat Thomas author of Listen Whitey! sounds of Black Power 1965-1975
JC Hopkins writes with a musician's ear and an artist's eye. Existential mysteries and hard-earned realizations overflow in scene after indelible scene of this quintessentially American coming-of-age novel. - Mark Swartz, author of Instant Karma and The Music Never DiedLes informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.
