Although traditional river fishers possess extensive knowledge regarding St. Vincent’s freshwater biodiversity, little formal published information previously existed. This publication is the first comprehensive description of the biodiversity of the fresh and brackish water fish and crustaceans extant on St. Vincent. The information presented was collected during a survey of rivers and interviews with fisher folk who utilise them. Detailed information and illustrations for each species recorded is presented. The ecological context in which these species occur and the environmental threats they
face are discussed. With this publication, a description of our rich freshwater biodiversity is now available to conservation planners, naturalists, teachers, and students. It is hoped that this information will stimulate public interest in our rivers, the
biodiversity that they sustain, and the need to conserve them.
