Synopsis

Born and bred in the Saturn System, living their lives in the shadow of Saturn’s rings, “Islanders” are destined to never walk the surface of Earth, or breathe the air of an Earthly sky. Their purpose is to maintain the mines scattered throughout the multitudinous satellites of the sixth planet, and serve the needs of the hordes of miners sent to claim its precious ores.

On the satellite Dione, Islander Alejandro Detweiler, the son of honest farmers, prepares to leave his parents’ home. The monotony of endless cultivation and harvest are not for him. Instead, with visions of adventure and glory before his eyes, he enlists in the Aerospace Guard. Perhaps, he tells himself, he might become a captain someday, and possibly, even Captain of the Fleet.

Alejandro’s first assignment seems mundane – a below-decks engineer on the utility ship Custis, but that changes when the ship is ordered to the disreputable colony of Prospector’s World to investigate a mysterious death. Alejandro finds himself included in the landing party – someone has to carry the officers’ suitcases – and before long, he mingles with the throwaways, runaways, and castaways of this remote community.

The Custis departs Janus for another mission, and Alejandro’s sole remaining companion, the ship’s senior non-commissioned officer, is assaulted and left unconscious in the medical clinic. Suddenly, Alejandro is alone, with an unsolved murder on his hands, an angry mob before him, and a community in chaos. What he does next will determine the fate of Prospector’s World, and decide his future.
