Smith & Wesson produced millions of this small revolver through its three-quarter-century lifetime. Originally designed for police work, police chiefs christened it “Chiefs Special.” Police departments, military units, and other enthusiasts have used variations of this beloved model.
Especially in the early years Smith & Wesson made seemingly small, subtle changes to its Chiefs Special. Through the years many authors have written about this iconic arm. Each story paints an image of the revolver, but even collectively they do not define the myriad changes it underwent.
Based primarily on the author’s Chiefs Special collection and original factory records from the personal collection of Smith & Wesson Historian Dr. Roy G. Jinks, this volume reviews Chiefs produced through the years and analyzes the model’s many precedent-setting changes.

Born and reared in tiny Wyoming towns, Mom's Mom, Mamo, taught me at age seven to shoot her snub-nosed Smith & Wesson .32 Regulation Police Model 31 revolver. I graduated from high school by the skin of my teeth, warmed the seats in the local community college's classrooms for a year, then draft number 007 rescued me from academia. After joining the United States Air Force in 1972, I graduated from spy school and worked as a communications analyst at National Security Agency (not because I was smart; I got a top secret clearance because I'd been a clean-cut kid who had held jobs and played a sax in the band). After 'nam I retrained into air traffic control-a job I loved. I told the free world's fighter pilots where to go at the Air Force's busiest desert southwest and overseas airfields. Along this pathway I attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to obtain bachelor's (1985) and master's (1991) degrees, published a highly touted pilot-controller communications article in the civilian Air Traffic Control Association's Journal of Air Traffic Control, attained the top non-commissioned rank: Chief Master Sergeant, and after 14 assignments in 28 years, I retired.Research impels me, and I like to write. I went to the University of Wyoming, and after five and a half years I earned a bachelor of arts in journalism with a minor in English. In my last year I edited UW's literary and arts magazine, Owen Wister Review. The Associated Collegiate Press named it one of the nation's top ten student magazines of 2005.I moved to a mountain town with thirty year-round residents, thirty miles from gas and groceries, co-owned a historic inn, hosted 1,400 guests from six continents, offered Wyoming's best single malt Scotch whisky selection in my Two-bit Cowboy Saloon, and retired again after a decade. Since, I have dedicated myself to historic research, writing, and editing. As a member of the town's historical society board of directors I proposed an anthology to celebrate the tiny town's 150th birthday. I solicited, then edited 104 stories by 52 contributors, including an introduction by Senator Al Simpson. Wyoming Historical Society named it their 2018 book of the year. I've served on boards for the Lander Chamber of Commerce, Wyoming Historical Society annual awards, and Fremont County solid waste disposal district. I am assistant editor of the Smith & Wesson Collectors Association Journal.Still don't know what I want to be if I grow up, but I do know my introduction to a small Smith & Wesson revolver as a boy has much to do with my passion for Chiefs Specials. Thank you, Mamo.
