Hatuey, the Taíno cacique from Hispaniola who fled Spanish brutality to Cuba, warned the island's people what was coming, and was burned at the stake for refusing to convert. Jacques de Sores, the French pirate who sacked and burned Havana in 1555 and forced Spain to finally take its most valuable Caribbean possession seriously. The Earl of Albemarle, who led the British siege of Havana in 1762 — one of the largest amphibious operations in history — and held the city for eleven months before trading it back to Spain for Florida. José Martí, Cuba's greatest literary and revolutionary figure, who spent decades in exile building the intellectual case for independence and died in the first skirmish of the war he organized. And El Morro — the fortress that watched it all — as the final narrator of a story that has not yet ended.

Following each narrative chapter is a section called History Beyond the Story — timeline verification, source documentation, and historiographical debate that separates documented fact from reasonable inference, for readers who want to dig deeper or verify the record.

Matthew J. Keller was the kind of kid who watched documentaries instead of cartoons. That preference never left him. Growing up in Chicago, he developed an early obsession not just with what happened in history but with why - why certain empires rose and collapsed, why borders fell where they did, why the world that exists today looks the way it does instead of a dozen other ways it easily could have.He spent his early career in industrial sales before attending Charleston School of Law, graduating in 2010 and practicing in Charleston before opening his own firm. He returned to Chicago in 2014, continued practicing law, and eventually stepped away from the law to return to business. In 2019 he relocated to Atlanta, where he lives with his wife and two children and runs a manufacturing and industrial sales company.The books began with a question his oldest daughter asked about their family's ancestors and an early American colony. The question sparked a research rabbit hole that led to another, and then another. Why did the thirteen colonies become the United States and not something else?
