Synopsis

They flew into fire when others fled.

From the jungles of Burma to the streets of Baghdad, Above and Beyond: When I Have Your Wounded tells the true story of the helicopter in American warfare, and the men and women who turned fragile machines into lifelines.

The journey begins in World War II, when experimental helicopters first lifted wounded airmen from the jungle. In Korea, the little H-13 Sioux proved that speed and lift could save lives in frozen mountains. In Vietnam, helicopters became the heartbeat of war, and medevac crews, known as Dust Off, lived by the words of Major Charles L. Kelly: “When I have your wounded.” Tens of thousands of soldiers survived because pilots, medics, and crew chiefs flew into gunfire to keep that promise.

The story continues through Mogadishu, Iraq, and Afghanistan, where Black Hawks, Apaches, and Chinooks carried troops into combat, pulled the wounded from ambushes, and remained the only lifeline in cities and mountains where roads meant death. Technology evolved, enemy weapons improved, but the mission never changed.

Written by Navy veteran and former rescue crewman JW Jones, Above and Beyond combines firsthand experience, historical records, and veteran testimony to honor those who went above and beyond for their brothers-in-arms. This is not just a history of machines, but of courage, measured in minutes, rotor turns, and lives saved.

When they called, these crews came.
