Synopsis

Synopsis: A successful former salve from Arkansas comes to the Navajo reservation and falls in love with a Navajo woman who has a son. They marry. She is murdered, and no one will help Emmett find who shot her in the back. He names only four suspects, and chases leads to discover someone else might have killed her. He threatens that person, and then is arrested for a murder he did not commit.

Autobiography: Few men find the kind of woman that they are desperate to spend all their energy and their whole life with. A man who is willing to give all his service, all his wealth, and all his attention to be married to that woman. And then to find that woman who feels the same way about him. Emmett found such a woman that he could be a one-woman man and love her forever as he provided for her in every way.

Emmett found such a woman. Then she was murdered. She was dead two hours before he returned from town, having successfully negotiated rights for the Navajos. He should have listened to her when she pleaded for him to stay home. He could have protected her.

Now she was dead. If there was anyone in the world who did not deserve to be shot in the back, it was Alameda. This was the worst thing that could have happened to Emmett. But now he would find out who killed her. He has some candidates for who might have done this. Emmett will investigate each one until he knows who killed her and defaced her.

The Navajo Chief could not help. The sheriff could not help. The army would not help. But he would find out who did this and then he would serve up some Cold-Blooded Justice.
