Synopsis

“We are safe in spite of ourselves.”

That’s the uncomfortable truth about modern crisis management. From TSA security theater to bureaucratic turf wars that cost lives, LEADING THROUGH CHAOS exposes why organizations repeatedly fail--and provides a battle-tested framework for leaders who refuse to be part of the problem.

This is not another feel-good leadership book filled with inspiring quotes and tidy frameworks. Instead, it offers an unflinching look at leadership failure — the kind that unfolds in crime scenes, intelligence operations, and crisis command centers, where lives hang in the balance and incompetence can be deadly.

Drawing on more than 40 years in law enforcement and intelligence work — including service with the NYPD, the NYPD Intelligence Division, and the New York City Office of Emergency Management — author Sal Lifrieri reveals the hidden patterns of organizational dysfunction that predict disaster. Through gripping real-world cases, from infant homicides in the Bronx to Russian organized crime investigations, from post-9/11 security theater to emergency management failures, Lifrieri exposes how ego, politics, and bureaucratic dysfunction create catastrophic outcomes.

This book introduces the “STOP Technique,” a practical methodology developed over decades of crisis response that helps leaders recognize when their own psychology is working against them. It’s essential reading for anyone who leads under pressure — from corporate executives to first responders, from government officials to military commanders.
