Scott Paranada-Fried arrived in Japan in the summer of 2001 with the aim of staying true to his Jewish roots. However, in the small town of Tamagawa, deep in the countryside, that proved to be an exceedingly difficult thing to do. Everywhere he looked, he found pork, shellfish, and other treif (unkosher food) staring him in the face. His co-workers tricked him into eating things that would surely have been frowned upon by his rabbi. He visited a city that was seemingly determined to offer him nothing but pork-based ramen.
So Scott decided to take a different approach: melding his Jewish beliefs with the cultural landscape that Japan had to offer, creating a composite experience that combined a focus on his core values with the creation of new experiences. He taught his students and colleagues about his traditions, but occasionally diverged from them to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of living in Japan. This strategy also bore fruit in other aspects of his life: helping him to adjust to the post 9/11 world, coping with personal tragedy, and coming out on the other side of the world.
Scott also includes events that would have been mundane back in America, but become unique when conducted in the rural boondocks of Japan: getting a driver's license, searching for a mysterious restaurant, teaching English, and engaging in hijinks with close relatives. He writes with a self-deprecatory tone and a surfeit of humor to engage the reader, but also, when necessary, uses pathos to describe both personal grief as well as the tragedy of world events both past and present. This short but compelling book is a primer on Japanese culture, a coming-of-age story, and a delightful romp through a fascinating area of the world.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. In the small Japanese town of Tamagawa, I was simultaneously a celebrity and the loneliest person in the world. When I arrived, I was feted like a star. I had top billing in the town newsletter and received a welcome dinner hosted by the mayor, but at the same time, living by myself for the first time, in a foreign country no less, I struggled to cope with major changes in my life as well as events that happened on a larger scale. Over the two-year period when I lived in Japan, I (mostly) accepted my gay identity, tried to be just kosher and Jewish enough to satisfy my ancestors, and began to come to terms with the tragic events of 9/11, which happened a scant month into my sojourn. I persevered through it all with my newfound understanding of Japanese concepts that helped to guide me and the kind and generous people that I met along the way. In the end, I emerged from my experience a more reflective, self-aware and optimistic person, one who was eager and capable of handling my challenges back in America. This is a memoir/travelogue of my two years living in the Japanese countryside. This item is printed on demand.
