Synopsis

He was three months old when the man who raised him signed the papers. He was eighteen when he found out.

The call came after midnight, from a woman he had not seen since she walked out on Christmas Eve when he was six. His father had been dead for eighteen months. There was no one left to ask.

Frederick "Freddy" Beede worked two jobs and never explained himself. He was denied the uniform he wanted because he was colorblind. He corrected strangers who misspelled his name — there's an E at the end of that for a reason — and one summer he moved his family sixty miles out of Lynn without ever saying why, the same season his son was becoming a ballplayer people drove out to watch.

He died before he could answer a single question about any of it.

Finding the answers took thirty-five years: a clerk's book at City Hall, a professional career that ended in ten months, two sons of his own, and finally an afternoon across a kitchen table from a blood uncle who had been given away himself, one generation earlier.

By then the name had traveled from a kitchen table in Lynn to a major league mound.

There's an E at the end, a memoir about what makes a man your father, blood, a name, or the life he spends on you without ever asking to be understood.

The blood writes the first part. The man who stays writes the rest.
