“The Boeing 737’s main gear tires began to lock, but on the glare ice they had little effect. The jet continued sliding forward, carrying its momentum across the ramp toward the terminal building. … but the icy surface offered almost no directional control, as the aircraft slid steadily and predictably toward the terminal. … the heavy jet began to slide sideways.”
Life Below 1,000 Feet is a comprehensive collection of experiences, stories, aircraft accidents and incidents, and Alaskan bush pilot mishaps. It includes anecdotes from his personal flying experiences and close calls, as well as insights into what it’s like to live and work at remote facilities, including his 4 years above the Arctic Circle. It offers a unique perspective drawn from his observations as an air traffic specialist stationed at six Flight Service Stations (FSS) throughout Alaska.
Pilot Mick Batt dedicated 39 years to the Flight Service Air Traffic Division of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He began his career in the Alaskan wilderness, also known as the bush, where extreme flying conditions were the norm. Later, he was transferred to the Lower 48 as a Flight Service Manager and instructor at the Air Traffic Flight Service Academy in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
