HE WALKED AWAY FROM THE ONLY GIRL HE EVER LOVED. IT TOOK HIM MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS TO FIND HIS WAY BACK.
At seventeen, Sam Morris was the boy most likely to ruin his own life — and he did. Too proud, too restless, and too afraid to fight for what mattered, he left the girl he loved behind in Kentucky and disappeared into a future that nearly destroyed him.
By the time Sam builds a new life in Hawaii — a law degree, a thriving consulting firm, a home in the hills above Honolulu — he has become a man his younger self would barely recognize. But success has not filled the one space he left empty. Then Tayler walks back into his world, a schoolteacher raising a son alone, and everything Sam thought he had settled inside himself comes undone.
What follows is not a quick or easy love story. Two people carrying decades of old choices, old silences, and old hurt must decide whether what they once had is still worth reaching for — and whether trust, once broken, can ever truly be rebuilt.
The Love He Never Expected is a story about the long way around: the price of running from what matters, the patience required to earn back what was lost, and the kind of love that asks more of you than you thought you had to give.
For readers who believe that some things are worth waiting for.

Jackie L. Smith - known to most as Jack - is a retired United States Navy veteran whose service spanned two decades, from 1959 to 1979. He went to sea aboard aircraft carriers, crossed the Atlantic for hunter-killer training with the Sixth Fleet, served with helicopter squadrons, and traveled to ports from Boston to Quebec City to the Mediterranean. While on active duty he earned a bachelor's degree from Chaminade University in Honolulu and later a master's degree from Central Michigan University. After retiring from the Navy he spent eight years running a specialized hospital for the State of Oklahoma, then served another twenty years as a civilian with the United States Air Force, retiring in 2009 after more than four decades of public service. He began writing novels in his eighties. What started as a single book has become fifteen - thrillers, family crime stories, time-travel adventures, and portal fantasies. His novels draw on the institutional life he knew firsthand: the chains of command, the loyalty between brothers in arms, the quiet weight of doing the right thing when it costs you something. He writes about ordinary people who get pulled into extraordinary trouble, and the kind of stubborn integrity that gets a man through it.Jack lives in Staffordsville, Kentucky. He collects stamps, repairs computers, plays a lot of FreeCell.
