Success in business isn't won in the boardroom alone-it is earned through preparation, discipline, leadership, teamwork, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
In Big Game Theory, entrepreneur, CEO, and lifelong offshore fisherman Thomas G. Garvey III draws powerful parallels between running successful companies and running offshore sportfishing expeditions. Through captivating stories from the cockpit of a 64-foot Viking yacht and decades of building manufacturing companies, Garvey demonstrates that the same principles that consistently catch trophy fish also build extraordinary organizations.
Each chapter combines real-world fishing adventures with proven business concepts inspired by classics such as Good to Great, Extreme Ownership, The Goal, The E-Myth Revisited, Atomic Habits, Traction, and The Checklist Manifesto. Readers will discover practical lessons on leadership, preparation, accountability, safety, continuous improvement, hiring exceptional people, building resilient teams, strategic planning, customer service, and maintaining focus during uncertainty.
Whether navigating storms hundreds of miles offshore or economic downturns on land, the fundamentals never change: prepare relentlessly, trust your crew, communicate clearly, adapt quickly, and never stop learning.
Filled with memorable stories, actionable leadership principles, and timeless business wisdom, Big Game Theory is both an inspiring adventure and a practical guide for entrepreneurs, executives, managers, business owners, and anyone striving to lead with confidence.
If you enjoy Good to Great, Extreme Ownership, The Goal, or The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, this book will show you how those same principles come alive on the open ocean-and how they can transform your organization.

Thomas Garvey is a fourth-generation manufacturing entrepreneur, business leader, and lifelong offshore angler. He spent over a decadeas CEO of Garvey Corporation, a leading manufacturer of packaging equipment, where he helped drive significant growth by applying principles of lean manufacturing, the Theory of Constraints, and a relentless focus on throughput, quality, and customer value.Thomas later led the successful sale of Garvey Corporation to Columbus McKinnon, a publicly traded global leader in motion control solutions. Through that experience-and the challenges that came with it-he developed a deep understanding of leadership, scaling organizations, and navigating complex business transitions.Beyond the boardroom, Thomas has spent thousands of hours offshore, running and operating sportfishing yachts along the East Coast and into the canyons and islands of the Atlantic. From chasing tuna in the Wilmington and Spencer Canyons to crossing to the Bahamas, he has developed a passion for big-game fishing that mirrors his approach to business: preparation, discipline, adaptability, and execution under pressure. In Big Game Theory, Thomas brings these two worlds together, drawing powerful parallels between offshore fishing and business leadership. His philosophy to "Go the Extra Ten" reflects a commitment to exceeding expectations, building strong teams, and doing the little things right when it matters most.Today, Thomas is the founder of TGM Industries LLC, where he advises companies on growth, operational excellence, and leadership development. He lives between the Northeast and Florida and remains deeply committed to family, mentorship, and continuous improvement-on land and at sea.
