The author, Russell Brown, was born in California and cruised on a trimaran as a kid with his family in the early 1970's. He has been building his own designs since his teens; several 30-36 foot multihulls as well as nesting dinghies and nesting kayaks. For years he specialized in making custom composite parts for his own projects and well known racing boats. Even though Russell is considered to have mastered the art of working with epoxy, he continues to learn. Not inclined to teach classes or speak publicly, he collaborated with Off Center Harbor on a 10 part video series that compliments his writing on the subject. In 2009, he and his wife, Ashlyn, began their boat kit business, Port Townsend Watercraft, featuring the PT 11 nesting dinghy designed and developed by Russell as his ideal dinghy, and as of 2021, sold as a kit by Chesapeake Light Craft. Booklets like Scarfing Basics and the now discontinued Painting Perfection, (the featured paint having been discontinued) have also been published. There are other titles in the works related to wood/epoxy and carbon composite construction. Each new project provides him with photo ops that are worth documenting but being a perfectionist, it takes time to get a cohesive selection together. Stay tuned!
