While under house arrest, chained constantly to a Roman soldier, Paul wrote a letter to the church in Ephesus. He had spent more time in Ephesus than any other city during his missionary journeys. Although the Romans had imprisoned Paul, he continued to guide the church through his letters and locally teaching all who came to him. As was Paul’s usual practice, he emphasized justification by faith. However, Paul’s message was rejected by the Jews so he turned to the Gentiles. Paul’s ministry at Ephesus was marked by several miracles (Acts 19:18-20). So many people followed Christ that the craftsman who made idols caused a riot. Yet, Ephesus became an outpost of spreading the gospel to Asia.
