Synopsis

In 241 BC, after twenty-three years of war, Rome and Carthage made peace. This is the story of the document that ended the longest continuous war of classical antiquity, reconstructed clause by clause, for the first time in English.

The Treaty of Lutatius is remembered, when it is remembered at all, as a date and a set of figures: the evacuation of Sicily, an indemnity of thirty-two hundred talents, the close of the First Punic War. The treaty itself has never been the subject of a book. Its actual clauses, the men who negotiated it, and the assembly that rejected the first draft and forced a harder bargain remain almost unknown. No official copy survives. Its text must be recovered from the summaries and quotations of ancient historians, above all Polybius.

This volume presents that reconstruction, with the attested and restored portions clearly distinguished throughout, so the reader always knows which is which. The treaty stands at the front of the book, before a word of commentary. The chapters that follow supply everything the document assumes: the exhausted final years of the war, the naval victory at the Aegates Islands that forced Carthage to terms, and the negotiation between the consul Gaius Lutatius Catulus and Hamilcar Barca. Later chapters trace the treaty's afterlife, from Rome's first overseas province to the seizure of Sardinia that deformed the settlement and the uneasy peace that led, a generation later, to Hannibal.

The reconstruction draws on the full ancient evidence, the standard modern accounts of the war, and the underwater archaeology of the Egadi Islands. Here, the physical debris of the battle that forced the treaty is still being recovered from the sea floor.

Written in clear prose for both scholars and general readers, The Treaty of Lutatius opens Forgotten Documents of the Roman Republic, a companion series to Forgotten Men of the Roman Republic, from Duo Lepores Press. Includes the reconstructed Latin text with translation, commentary, and illustrations.
