This four book series is designed to start your child or student on the road to reading.
Word families are a group of words consisting of the same or similar patterns of letters or sounds. For example, the word family "-at" would include the words cat, mat, rat, and many more. Research has shown that teaching is key in helping beginning or struggling readers understand the complexities of the English language.
As a lifelong teacher and English Language Arts tutor, I have helped many children and adults who struggled with reading due to dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, or other comprehension difficulties. Research has proven that it is easier for a beginning/struggling reader to decode words by breaking them up into the onset and rime, rather than trying to sound out each individual phoneme (c-a-t).
To clarify, the onset is the initial phonological unit of any word (e.g. /c/ in cat). The rime is the part of the word including the vowel and letters that follow (e.g. /at/ in cat).
When I introduce a new word family and ask my students to decode the words, I always begin by asking them to sound out the rime first ( "-at) first, and then "smash" or blend the onset (-c) onto the front of the word. I find that it is easier for students to start with the middle vowel sound, link it to the ending consonant and then blend that sound with the sound of the first consonant. For example, when teaching the "-at" family, I would first ask them to sound out the rime or "-at" first and then "smash" or blend the "c" onto the "at" sound to decode the word "cat".
Beginning or struggling readers respond positively to rhyming word family poems. The element of rhyme (not to be confused with "rime") in the poems is effective because awareness to rhyme develops early and easily. As an added plus, the poems are fun to read and funny!
