Based on the true-life adventures of Roy and Joy Thomas.
Della (Smith) Curtis was one of twelve children and a runaway at age sixteen. She was a housewife and mother when she met Roy Thomas at a county fair in Iowa in the late 1920s. Little did she know that her life was about to change. Roy was an acrobat, Vaudeville entertainer, and decorated World War I veteran. What happened next would challenge his loyalties and her sense of right and wrong. The two were smitten and the decisions they made upended their lives, propelling them both into careers as acrobatic tumblers and clowns. Della created a stage name, and the professional clown act of “Roy & Joy" was born. They were billed as “America’s only Mr. and Mrs. Clown Team” and Joy was often billed as “the only woman clown in America.” Pulling a small trailer, they traveled to all corners of the country, performing with some of the nation’s top-notch circuses, up through their final year as clowns in 1960. We travel with them and, through their eyes, get a glimpse of mid-20th-century circus life—complete with its Big Top, large menagerie, and colorful caravan of performers.
Beyond her wildest expectations, Joy became a pioneer for women in the clowning world, and Roy was at her side from start to finish. This is their story.
