Public education in America stands at a crossroads, and silence is no longer an option. Fork in the Chalkboard is a provocative blend of memoir, advocacy, and scenario-based analysis that asks a simple but urgent question: which future will we choose?
Drawing from lived experience as an educator and grounded in real policy trends, Derek Setser presents eight possible futures for U.S. schools. Through vivid vignettes paired with rigorous analysis, the book explores pathways ranging from privatized "loyalty hubs" and AI-driven classrooms to grassroots community schools and democratic renewal movements. Some scenarios are alarming, others inspiring-but all are plausible, many already unfolding in districts nationwide.
Rather than prediction, this book offers preparation. Readers meet students learning under corporate banners, families navigating fragmented microschool systems, and educators leaving the profession in droves. Alongside these cautionary tales are portraits of resilience-communities reclaiming shuttered schools, students organizing for justice, and coalitions demanding equitable funding and representation.
With accessible prose and a clear call to action, Fork in the Chalkboard is both a mirror and a map. It illuminates how policy choices, economic forces, and cultural battles are reshaping schools, while equipping readers with "Blueprints for Action"-practical steps for students, parents, educators, leaders, and advocates who want to defend and reimagine public education.
At once urgent and hopeful, this book refuses nostalgia and insists on participation. Public education is more than classrooms and test scores; it is a cornerstone of democracy and community life. Whether you are a teacher, parent, policymaker, or citizen, Fork in the Chalkboard challenges you to recognize the stakes, see the patterns, and join the fight for a just and democratic future of learning.
Because the future of public education is not written yet. But it will be, and together, we will write it.

Derek Setser is an educator, advocate, and community organizer dedicated to defending and reimagining public education. As a classroom teacher, he has seen firsthand both the promise and the pressures facing America's schools: disinvestment, policy battles, burnout, and the resilience of students who continue to learn and lead in spite of it all.Beyond the classroom, Derek has worked with families, colleagues, and advocacy networks to push for equitable funding, stronger supports for educators, and community-driven reform. His writing blends lived experience with sharp policy insight, making complex issues accessible to parents, educators, and citizens alike. In Fork in the Chalkboard: Futures of American Public Education, Derek presents eight possible futures for U.S. schools; some dystopian, some hopeful, all urgent. He combines scenario-based storytelling with practical "Blueprints for Action," equipping readers to not only understand the stakes but also to take part in shaping what comes next. Derek lives in North Carolina with his wife, Kaci, and their two children, José and Addison. When he is not teaching or writing, he can be found spending time with his family, exploring local trails, or building connections between classrooms and communities.
