Synopsis

A Brooklyn public high school achieved New York State’s highest graduation rate for Black students. This is how it happened.

In They Were Black. All Black., Daryl Rock, PhD, former principal of Benjamin Banneker Academy, reveals how a school built on Black history, Black educators, and Black excellence produced extraordinary results.

Inspired by the legacy of Black teachers in the segregated schools of the American South, the academy was intentionally designed to affirm student identity while demanding academic excellence.

While many conversations about education focus on theory or critique, this book offers something different: a clear example of what is possible when culture, identity, and high expectations are aligned in practice.

At Benjamin Banneker Academy, students were surrounded by adults who looked like them, taught a curriculum that reflected their culture and history, and were held to uncompromising academic standards. Through firsthand accounts from students and educators—alongside a compelling narrative following the highs and lows of a basketball season—Dr. Rock shows how culture, expectations, and community drive achievement.

What if the problem was never the students—but the system?
