A propos de cet article

AMBASSADOR MORGENTHAU'S STORY By Henry Morgenthau FREE SHIPPING within contiguous U.S. Published in 1918, Ambassador Morgenthau's Story is the memoir of Henry Morgenthau Sr., who served as the United States Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1913 to 1916. The book is considered one of the most significant historical documents of the 20th century because it provides a firsthand, eyewitness account of the Armenian Genocide. The Armenian Genocide: Morgenthau documents the systematic "race extermination" of the Armenian people. He describes the forced deportations (death marches), massacres, and the "cold-blooded, calculating state policy" of the Ottoman authorities. Confrontations with Leaders: The memoir includes chilling details of Morgenthau’s private conversations with the "Young Turk" leaders—specifically Talaat Pasha (Minister of the Interior) and Enver Pasha (Minister of War). He recounts their indifference to human suffering and their justifications for the atrocities. German Influence: Morgenthau argues that Imperial Germany held significant sway over the Ottoman Empire and suggests that German officials either encouraged or failed to stop the massacres to maintain their wartime alliance. Humanitarian Efforts: The book covers the origins of the Near East Relief, a massive humanitarian campaign Morgenthau helped spark by alerting the American public to the crisis. Morgenthau was a Jewish-American businessman and a political appointee under President Woodrow Wilson. Though the U.S. remained neutral during the early years of WWI, Morgenthau used his diplomatic position to represent the interests of the Allies and to advocate for the Christian minorities (Armenians, Greeks, and Assyrians) within the empire. He eventually resigned in 1916, famously stating that he could no longer stay in a "place of horror" where he was unable to stop the destruction of an entire nation.
