It is a collection of apothegms (i.e.: precepts, sentences or aphorisms). This work is a collection of apothegms from classical antiquity, collections and translations of classical Greek and Latin authors: Plutarch, Diogenes, Xenophon, Pliny, Titus Livius, Suetonius, Macrobius, Herodotus, Seneca, Philostratus, Valerius Maximus, Eutropius and others. It has known great success and had numerous editions in several languages. Many apothegms repeated ideas of Socrates, Plato, and Alexander the Great. According to Speroni (Wit and Wisdom of the Italian Renaissance. Berkeley (California): University of California Press 1964), Apophthegmatum opus is one of the most monumental collections of apothegms ever edited. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book contains some two hundred and fifty sayings and anecdotes from prominent figures of ancient Sparta, considered highly insightful and educational in their own time and even today. The author provides the original Greek texts of these maxims and their English translations. These sayings have great value for historians, classicists, students of rhetoric, or anyone interested in the thoughts and culture of the ancient Greek people. These ideas demonstrate not merely historical interest but reflect general principles of human life and morality that remain relevant and practically useful in the present day. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N° de réf. du vendeur 9781390579147_0
