8vo. 7.25 x 5 inches. [16] + 607, 606 - 766 + 769 - 1352 + [18] This copy lacks the 'errata' leaf. Bound in original full calf repaired at top and tail of spine but a fine copy in original condition. Portrait + 12 plates, complete. In some copies there is a folding view of Salmon's academy which is here present, bound at the end with half the view torn away. This 17th Century compendium of surgery and cures, pharmacopoeia was gleaned by the ingenious Mr Salmon from many books in many languages and as such provides an interesting overview of the world's knowledge of most things medical at this date. The 12 plates are mostly of surgical instruments including dental instruments, syringes, saws, and many others more reminiscent of the torture chamber than the physician's bed. The somewhat strange pagination is accounted for by various misnumbering of pages as noted in STC. There is a cancelled title page to the second volume dated 1698 inserted at page 730 which is not part of the original collation. This title first appeared in 1698 however this edition seems to be quite rare there being only 7 copies located in the British Isles, 2 in Europe and 5 in North America.
