Original dark brown cloth binding decorated with still fairly bright gilt stamping, spine ends frayed with cloth worn even to top and bottom edges of text block, repair to surface peeling of spine's surface cloth, slight associated splitting to front joint and hinge but front board still fairly firm, rear joint and hinge solid, some scuffing along boards' beveled edges with corners worn. Top edge gilt. Small antiquarian ownership label of "Alfred M. Frost Poughkeepsie N.Y." at top left corner of front pastedown. Long swath (H 3.5cm x L 10cm) of front free endpaper torn from top right corner. Extensive pencil notes on page 31 but no other such markings readily apparent upon a quick perusal. Pages 115-128 slightly pulled. Chapters titled: "Early American Art;" "American Painters (1828-1878);" "American Painters (1828-1878);" "Sculpture in America" and "Present Tendencies of American Art." Frontispiece and b/w plates all with tissue guards; other b/w illustrations inset amongst text; Index; single page of publisher's ads at rear. Only a good copy but an interesting review of American art inclusive to the late eighteenth century by a contemporary critic. Artists with at least three citations in the Index include Washington Allston, John Singleton Copley, Thomas Crawford, Thomas Doughty, Asher Brown Durand, William Morris Hunt, John Lafarge, Francis Augustus Lathrop, Edward Greene Malbone, Thomas Moran, Samuel F.B.
