A propos de cet article

AUSTRALIAN WAR PHOTOGRAPHS A Pictorial Record from November 1917 to the End of the War Edited by Captain George H. Wilkins, M.C. Published by the A.I.F. Publications Section, Australia House, Strand, London – 1919 An important and highly collectible original First World War Australian photographic record, published immediately after the war by the Australian Imperial Force. Edited by Captain George Hubert Wilkins M.C., who later became internationally famous as Sir Hubert Wilkins, polar explorer, aviator and photographer. During WWI Wilkins served as an Australian official war photographer and was awarded the Military Cross and Bar for his actions while working at the front. The book provides a remarkable photographic record of the Australian forces during the final year of the Great War, covering the period from November 1917 through to the Armistice and the end of the war. It contains an extensive collection of original wartime photographs depicting Australian troops, battlefield conditions, operations, equipment, devastated landscapes and the closing stages of Australia's campaign on the Western Front. THIS COPY This is the original 1919 A.I.F. publication, not a modern facsimile or reproduction. The book has at some stage been professionally rebound in an attractive brown cloth hardcover, with specially made title labels to the front board and spine. Importantly, the original 1919 illustrated front wrapper has been retained inside the binding. This is particularly desirable as the original paper/card covers of these publications were vulnerable to damage and are frequently found heavily worn or incomplete. The original title page clearly states: Australian War Photographs A Pictorial Record from November, 1917 to the end of the War Edited by Captain Geo. H. Wilkins, M.C. Published by A.I.F. Publications Section Australia House, Strand, London 1919 CONDITION The later professional cloth binding is in very good condition and has protected the original publication extremely well. The retained original illustrated wrapper displays age-related rubbing, marks and wear, as would be expected from a publication more than 100 years old. There is some age toning, foxing and marking internally, including an old pencil notation to the title page. Please study the photographs carefully as the photographs form part of the condition description and show the actual book being offered for sale. A particularly attractive example because the fragile original publication has been preserved within a quality protective binding. COLLECTOR INTEREST A desirable Australian military history volume with several areas of collecting interest: Original 1919 publication Australian Imperial Force – AIF First World War / WWI Australian official war photography Western Front Australian military history Captain George Hubert Wilkins MC Sir Hubert Wilkins Australian War Records Section Original illustrated wrapper retained Professionally rebound for preservation An excellent addition to a serious collection of Australian WWI, AIF, military photography, Western Front or Sir Hubert Wilkins material. A scarce piece of Australian military publishing history, produced by the AIF only months after the guns fell silent. …
