A propos de cet article

Bifolium, written on a single page of Treasury Department stationery to the editor of the New York Evening Post. Signed at the end, "S. P. Chase," with Bryant noted as the addressee at the bottom left of the Letter. Old horizontal light folds; closed tear [no loss] at center repaired archivally. Very Good plus. Chase, who had an unconquerable yen for the presidency, did all that he could to thwart a second Lincoln Administration. His unseemly ambition rendered him vulnerable to criticism. That, and the inevitable hostility which important public officers endure in stressful times, wounded him. Chase wrote this letter, demonstrating his extreme concern for his reputation, two weeks before Lincoln sacked him. He had tested Lincoln's patience several times by tendering his resignation. Finally Lincoln called his bluff and accepted it. Chase complained to Bryant about an article titled 'Public Service' by a "loyal private banker." It appeared in the June 24th issue of the New York Evening Post. According to the Salmon P. Chase Papers. Bryant's June 28 reply expressed regret and assured that he would investigate. Here Chase writes, "I enclose a couple of slips one from an editorial of the Evening Post & the other from an article admitted into its columns, with some notes on the last. "For good tempered practical criticism I am always grateful - and even from ill tempered I try to draw lessons. Such articles as that of the 'loyal private banker' belong to neither class. Made up of false or distorted statements of fact and gross imputation of dishonest and dishonorable motives they deserve their only claim to consideration from admission into such papers as the Evening Post. "I think that under the circumstances I ought to know the name of the writer. I especially desire it that I may not impute his calumnies even in thought to the wrong person. If you do not dispute from this view will you give it to me? "There is One who knows with what fidelity I have endeavored to serve this Country; with what anxiety to know & to do what is best for the People & with what absolute disregard of personal & private consideration. With Him I dare trust my Cause." A Cincinnati lawyer renowned for his defense of fugitive slaves, Chase argued Jones v. Van Zandt (1847) in the Supreme Court. Losing, Chase argued that slavery was a product of state laws, and a fugitive who flees the state where he/she is held in bondage ceases to be a slave. During the 1840s Chase was instrumental in the founding of the Liberty and Free-Soil Parties, both with anti-slavery platforms anticipating the Republican Party. He became Governor and then Senator from Ohio, Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury, and finally-- by Lincoln's appointment-- Chief Justice of the United States.…
