The representation of man has once again become the focus of art. Conventional depictions were set by precepts handed down from the early Renaissance, while art of the last century was concerned with annulling these same precepts. Now, media such as photography, film, video and electronic image processing challenge the accuracy of traditional concepts of the image of man, often with quite contradictory results. The figure and the portrait, for example, once seemed a thing of the past; now, however, various approaches in art suggest a wider view of man, his producibility and his reproducibility. This volume presents a number of important opinions in order to illustrate the current state of human depiction in art.
