First printing with Scribner's "A" on the copyright page and bright yellow on the jacket spine. A Near Fine copy in Very Good+ dust jacket. Some foxing to endpapers, otherwise clean throughout. Dust jacket with some edgewear, including a nick to top edge of front panel touching the G in Hemingway, and a bit of loss at fold of lower panel. Still a very bright and attractive example. One of Hemingway's later novels, Across the River and Into the Trees grapples with the distorting power of memory at the end of life. The novel follows the meditations and ruminations of Colonel Richard Cantwell, who, while sitting in a duck blind in Venice, Italy, looks back on his life. While the book topped the New York Times bestseller list for many weeks, it saw mixed critical response: Cantwell's reflections on nostalgia and remorse sharply divided reviewers and the general reading public. Near Fine in Very Good + dust jacket. N° de réf. du vendeur 7864

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. The War is just over. In Venice, a city elaborately and affectionately described, the American Colonel, Richard Cantrell, falls passionately in love with Renata, a young Italian countess who has 'a profile that could break your or anyone else's heart'. Cantrell is embittered, war-scarred and old enough to be Renata's father, but he is overwhelmed by the selflessness and freshness of the love she is offering. But this is no fairy tale. The fighting may be ended, but the wounds of war have not yet healed. And for some, the longed-for peace has come too late. A lesser known classic by one of the great American writers of the twentieth century, Across the River And Into The Trees is still vintage Hemingway. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. N° de réf. du vendeur GOR000730447
