These tracts are primarily historical addresses containing biographical and history on George Washington, Alexander R. Shepherd, Colonel Ninian Beall, Colonel Joseph Belt and Ainsworth Spofford. Alexander R. Shepherd was governor of the District of Columbia from 1873-74, and is sometimes called 'The father of Modern Washington,' and considered to have been an influential boss in the city(Wikipedia). 'Smallwood's Immortals' chronicles an early battle in the Revolutionary War, when a small group of troops from Maryland engaged a larger British force. Colonel Ninian Beall was an early settler in Maryland, having previously fought for the Scotch-English army and subsequently fighting Native American tribe of the Susquehannah. Colonel Joseph Belt was a colonel during the French and Indian War and a patentee of Chevy Chase, Maryland. Ainsworth Rand Spofford was the sixth librarian of congress of the United States. The piece on his life, containing work by several authors, also contains a chronological list of his writings. GOOD condition, slightly ex-library, with a bookplate on the inside cover. Pamphlets all bound in olive cloth. Minor soiling, general fading, and a few faint stains to the cloth. Extremities with moderate bumping and scuffing. Pamphlets with general toning to the paper. A few with minor pencil notes, marginalia and underlining. Minor scattered soiling and very minor foxing. Some of the wraps with some chipping and wear along the extremities, as well as minor notations/names to the covers.
