1599 Claudius Aelianus Varia Historia Greco-Roman History Greek Mythology Latin Claudius Aelianus was a 2nd-century Roman orator known for his lessons in Greek and works that describe Greco-Roman lifestyle and worldviews. Only two of his works have survived, one being Varia Historia a collection of anecdotes, maxims, biographical sketches, and reports of natural wonders. Aelianus describes mythological heroes, living rulers and Caesars, Olympic athletes, religious beliefs, funeral customs, Greek art, fishing techniques, serpent and animal worship, styles of dress and costumes, and the lives of Greek and Roman playwrights. Varia Historia is generally considered to be a 3rd-century work, even though the first edition was not printed until 1545. This 1599 Latin edition was published in Geneva by Jean de Stoer.
