Paperback. Troy has fallen. Its towers are burning, its king is dead and its surviving people have no homeland. From the ruins emerges Aeneas, a warrior burdened with a mission greater than his own survival: to carry Troy's sacred legacy across the sea and establish the bloodline from which Rome will one day arise. The Aeneid: Aeneas, the Fall of Troy, the Journey to Italy, and the Epic Origins of Rome presents Virgil's monumental epic as a flowing and accessible narrative while examining the moral contradictions at its heart. It follows Aeneas as he escapes the destruction of Troy, loses his wife in the burning city, leads refugees across the Mediterranean and struggles against storms, monsters, hostile gods and the demands of destiny. The journey leads through the tragic love of Dido, the death of Anchises, the funeral games in Sicily and the terrifying descent into the Underworld. There, Aeneas is shown the future rulers, soldiers and emperors of Rome-and the immense historical purpose attached to his suffering. Yet destiny does not make the path innocent. Dido is abandoned, young warriors die before their promise can be fulfilled and the settlement of Italy requires a war against people defending their own homes. When the defeated Turnus finally asks for mercy, Aeneas must choose between Rome's declared ideal of compassion and the powerful demand for vengeance. Drawing upon Virgil's poem, ancient traditions and established historical context, this book explores the complete journey of Aeneas and the enduring questions raised by Rome's legendary foundation. It is a story of exile, duty, love, war and political destiny-and of the human lives sacrificed when the future of an empire is treated as inevitable.
