String-bound three-quarter brown leather over textured black leather boards with blind-stamped lettering on cover, containing 45 pasted down original photographs of ships from across the world participating in the World Colombian Exposition in Chicago (Chicago World's Fair), 1893, and its aggregate events in New York, Norfolk, etc., celebrating the 400th Anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the new world. Various events along the East Coast were scheduled to celebrate the anniversary. In Norfolk, Virginia, thirty-eight ships from ten nations gathered for the International Naval Review at Hampton Roads, before proceeding to New York City, which hosted the Naval Land Parade 5th Avenue, on April 26, 1893. In 1890, Congress passed an act authorizing the president to hold a naval review in New York harbor in late April 1893 "and to extend to foreign nations an invitation to send ships of war to join the U.S. Navy in rendezvous at Hampton Roads (Virginia) and proceed thence to said review." Our album contains photographs of thirty-two ships, including replicas the Santa Maria, the Nina and La Pinta, the latter built at Spanish shipyards to sail to America. The Santa Maria, Nina and La Pinta continued on to Chicago. Thirteen additional photographs depict international Naval divisions participating in the Naval Land Parade on 5th Avenue in conjunction with the opening of the World Fair. All photographs are uniformly captioned in contemporary handwriting, except the replicas of Columbus' ships.
