A propos de cet article
This fantastically detailed map of Allahabad, India (today's Prayagraj) was published in Calcutta by the British Survey of India Offices, then under the leadership of Colonel Commandant E.A. Tandy. It is the second edition, substantially revised from the first (1922) and printed in 1925. The map offers a glimpse of a rapidly growing and modernizing city - the capital of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh in the British Raj and a hotbed of revolutionary activity. A fascinating variety of features are identified throughout the image, with the legend in the lower left identifying the symbols used for buildings, water sources, boundary lines, and landscapes. Labeled locations of interest include schools, churches, government buildings, temples, hospitals, hotels, and local industries. The densely developed city center is surrounded by cultivated fields, orchards, and scattered suburbs bounded by the Ganges and Jumna Rivers. Along the shoreline of the latter, a large fort announces the British military presence. This is confirmed by rifle ranges, barracks, and other related Army facilities. Sheet Width (in) 28.5 Sheet Height (in) 28 Condition Description Color printed sheet mounted on linen and affixed to original illustrated paper wraps, as issued. Moderate wrinkling, scattered staining (mostly confined to the margins), fold wear, and spots of discoloration affect various parts of the image to a minimal degree. Good condition overall.
