First (dates match) of the third edition of the highly successful "pioneer volume" of the Saunders "American Text-Book" series of medical books [1893], which helped to establish America's place in the progress of surgery, worldwide. The fourth edition removed many of the illustrations and radically revised the content. Dark gren pebbled cloth. Good condition, hinges cracked and loose but sound. Small promo piece from Saunders on the Text-Book series laid in. Both editors were part of the generation of adventurer physicians. William Williams Keen, (1837 ? 1932), was surgeon for the Fifth Massachusetts Militia Regiment and then for the Union Army during the Civil War. He and S. Weir Mitchell did pioneering work in surgery and neurological injury. Keen was at the vanguard in American surgical practice and education. He was the first brain surgeon in the United States. He worked with six American presidents during his lifetime and led the team that performed a secret surgical operation to remove a cancerous jaw tumor on Grover Cleveland in 1893. James William White (November 2, 1850 ? April 24, 1916) was an American surgeon from Philadelphia. After participating in the Hassler expedition to the West Indies, he became a respected surgeon, teacher and author at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, with which he was associated from 1874 to 1916.
