Synopsis :

< b>Explore the wild heart of Spitsbergen through a seasoned naturalist’s lens. This nonfiction account follows Seton Gordon’s on‑the‑ground observations during a 1921 expedition, pairing travel writing with close notes on birds, mammals, and their icy world. Rich with photography, it transports readers to fjords, glaciers, and nesting ledges, where Arctic life reveals its surprises and resilience.

Across Gipps Valley, Prince Charles Foreland, Magdalena Bay, and other glacial landscapes, the author records how wildlife adapts to extreme conditions. The prose blends field detail with a sense of wonder, offering a clear view of how Arctic ecosystems function in harmony with ice, wind, and light. It’s a vivid portrait of a northern archipelago that shapes climate and captivates all who encounter it.

  • Crucial natural history notes on Arctic birds, seals, and sea life.

  • Stories from field photography and firsthand exploration of remote sites.

  • Illustrations and maps that illuminate the landscape and species.

  • A window into Spitsbergen’s seasons, habitats, and the challenges of life above the Arctic Circle.

Ideal for readers of natural history and Arctic travel, especially those drawn to wildlife in extreme environments.

Présentation de l'éditeur: Excerpt from Amid Snowy Wastes: Wild Life on the Spitsbergen Archipelago

This book is the outcome of a visit to the Spitsbergen Archipelago in the summer of 1921 as photographer with the Oxford University Expedition.

The chapters do not attempt to describe the achievements of the Expedition, they are merely a narrative of my own personal observations and experiences; but I shall be more than satisfied if I have succeeded in bringing before the mind's eye of the reader the distinctive charm of that far northern land.

Few people seem indeed to realize how far north the archipelago lies, although at its most northerly point it is less than 600 miles from the North Pole itself. From Tromsö in the extreme north of Norway, it took us six days' steaming to reach Spitsbergen, the only halt during that time being a few hours' stay at Bear Island.

Some of the chapters in an abbreviated form originally appeared in the Scotsman and my thanks are due to the Editor of that paper for his courtesy in agreeing to their reproduction here.
