In 1533, Anabaptists led by Jan Matthison reached the city of Münster. Intending to establish a “New Jerusalem” within the city walls, they encountered Johann Bockelson, who claimed to have been an actor until a voice – in the middle of the dress rehearsal for Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex – commanded him to become an Anabaptist. With eloquence and persuasive sloganeering, the Anabaptists gained numerous followers within the city, including the Mayor Knipperdollinck, which gave them political power. Many were executed or expelled from the city, including Bishop Franz von Waldeck, who fled to the city gates and raised an army there, intent on liberating Münster from the Anabaptists. When Matthison was killed in an attack, Bockelson assumed the role of leader and brutally continued on his chosen path.
At the request of Bishop von Waldeck, Emperor Charles V, the Cardinal, the Landgrave of Hesse, and an Elector finally sent troops to Münster for support. The Anabaptists, now weakened by the siege, were defeated in an attack. Only Bockelson escaped execution by using his acting and oratory skills to convince the Cardinal to give him a place in his court theater troupe. However, to keep up appearances, someone else was executed in his place, visible to all, leaving the reader and viewer with “an ironic play about power, religious madness, and self-interest.”
About Friedrich Dürrenmatt
The author of almost thirty plays, who was nominated many times for the Nobel Prize in Literature, Swiss dramatist Friedrich Dürrenmatt is one of the most important European playwrights of the 20th century. He became known in the 1950s and 1960s for plays like The Visit and The Physicists, while producing numerous works of theater theory and a large body of narrative work, especially detective fiction.
Dürrenmatt was born in 1921 in Konolfingen (near Bern), the son of a Protestant pastor. He initially studied German, philosophy, and the natural sciences, while planning to become a painter, before turning to writing in 1945. Following his most important dramatic works, which were authored between 1952 and 1962, Dürrenmatt worked as a theatre director and member of the management team at the Basel Theater (1967-1969) and as a consultant to the Zurich Schauspielhaus (1970-1972), adapting plays by Shakespeare, Lessing, Büchner, and Strindberg. At the end of the 1980s, Dürrenmatt retired from the theater following a fierce cultural and political controversy. He died in Neuchâtel on December 14, 1990.
Many of his works are collected in English translation in a three-volume set, published by the University of Chicago Press, translated by Joel Agee, under the title Selected Writings: Essays (Vol. 1), Fictions (Vol. 2), and Plays (Vol. 3). His play, The Anabaptists, appears here, for the first time in English translation by Lauren Friesen, edited by Berit Jany and Maxwell Kennel, in the Anabaptist and Mennonite Studies series published by the Pandora Press (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada).
