A propos de cet article

Joseph Barry, under the pseudonym Junior Josephus, provides an extraordinary example of descriptive history from The Annals Of Harper s Ferry with Sketches Of Its Founder and many prominent characters connected with its history. Second Edition, Martinsburg, W.Va.: Office of the Berkeley Union, 1872, 126 pp, two plates, stitched. Original printed and illustrated wrappers. The front wrapper is illustrated with a portrait of radical abolitionist John Brown [repeated after page 32]. The rear wrapper contains a portrait of John W. Garrett [repeated after page 110]. There is a wonderful advertisement for the Mountain View Hotel in Harper s Ferry, laid down on the plain inner wear wrapper. The second edition was promoted by the first edition, which was much smaller and issued in 1869. The book describes the early history of the Town but emphasizes the important period from John Brown s raid through the end of the Civil War. Barry was an eyewitness to the raid and the subsequent trial, which made him an authority. A sketch of John W. Garrett is also present. Garrett became president of the B & O Railroad. Brown s raiders had stopped a train at Harper s Ferry and sent a telegram to the U.S. Secretary of War. Federal troops with U.S. Marines led by Col. Robert E. Lee from Arlington House, VA, across the river from the Capital were sent to put down the rebellion on a special B & ) train. Brown was hanged on December 2, 1859. All six of Brown s captured men were tried and hanged. Five additional men who had been captured escaped. Author Barry was born in Ireland but spent most of his life in Harper s Ferry. Text is clean. A few edge chips to several pages, not affecting the text. Everything we sell is guaranteed authentic forever to the original buyer. We also offer a 30-day return policy.
