Printed broadside, 15 7/8 x 6 1/2 inches, employing several sizes and styles of type, including italics. Of particular interest to those offering the warning against the Know Nothings are these two resolutions: "Resolved, That it shall be the duty of the G. Secretary to inform all the Subordinate Councils throughout the State, of the nominations here made for all offices, and that it shall be made the duty of each such Subordinate Council to appoint a committee of vigilance, consisting of five members, whose object it shall be to advance the principles of our order generally, and especially to secure the election of our entire ticket here made," and "Resolved, That each such council shall appoint an elector for its county, to defend our principles when necessary, and advance the names and represent the interests of our candidates." The publishers of the broadside "challenge the President, Hon. R.E.B. Baylor, to say whether he is ignorant of these proceedings. His denial would receive full credence." [Baylor, founder of Baylor University, and a well respected district judge, was Grand President elect of the Know Nothing council. The slate of "officers elect" appears at the bottom of the broadside. The Know Nothing Party held this secret June convention at Washington-on-the-Brazos under his chairmanship]. Also criticized in the broadside is David C. Dickson (1818-1880) who ran on the 1853 Democratic Party and was elected and served as Lt. Governor of Texas with Governor Elisha M. Pease, but left the Democrats in 1855, as indicated here ("What will the State Times now have to say of the 'STERLING DEMOCRAT, DAVID C. DICKSON?'"), to accept the 1855 nomination for governor from the Know Nothings (he was defeated by Pease). Not in Winkler/Friend. Not recorded on OCLC. Rather uniformly foxed, small circle tidelines in margin, small hole in center (affecting three letters); still a very good copy of a rare Texas broadside concerning the Know Nothings. "The antiforeign, anti-Catholic secret society called the American Order, more popularly known as the Know-Nothing movement, reached Texas by the mid-1850s. Many Texans joined the movement and especially its political manifestation, the American party. Some feared foreign ideas, especially the antislavery views often attributed to persons of Mexican and German origin in the state. Others believed that the state Democratic party was drifting dangerously toward a secessionist position and hoped that the new party might save the Union. Still others were Whigs who, realizing that their party was dying, did not want to join the Democrats. Some Texans were attracted by the secret character of the movement. Texas Know-Nothings, like their counterparts elsewhere in the nation, pledged to vote only for native-born Protestants for public office and to work to increase the residence requirement in the federal naturalization law from five to twenty-one years. "The party's first success in Texas came in December 1854, when Know-Nothing candidates swept the San Antonio municipal election. Then, in March 1855, Galvestonians elected a mayor who belonged to the secret order. In both towns native-born white voters seemed to be reacting to the growing number of foreign-born residents. "Early in the summer of 1855 Texas Know-Nothing leaders launched a plan to gain political control of the state by subverting the Democratic party. By that time they had secretly won over several Democratic leaders, including John S. Ford, chairman of the state Democratic committee, and Lieutenant Governor David C. Dickson. On June 11, under cover of a river-improvements convention at Washington-on-the-Brazos, the Know-Nothings nominated a slate of candidates to run for state offices and for Congress in the August election [the proceedings given in the broadside offered here are from that meeting].
