A propos de cet article

Antigone (1970) ? Jean Anouilh George G Harrap ? ISBN: 0245551387 ? Condition: Good Proudly supplied by Crappy Old Books , where marginalia is a feature, not a bug. So, you?d like a modern(ish) French reworking of a Greek tragedy about stubbornness, authority, and the catastrophic consequences of doing what you believe is right? Excellent. Jean Anouilh?s Antigone is the version where everyone smokes metaphorical Gauloises, morality wears a sharp suit, and the whole idea of ?doing the right thing? gets stress-tested to destruction. This is Antigone , but not as Sophocles knew her: She is still gloriously unreasonable. Creon is still painfully pragmatic. Everyone else is still deeply unhelpful. In other words, it?s perfect. About this copy (brace yourself) This particular 1970 George G Harrap edition is in Good condition ? ?Good? in the time-honoured Crappy Old Books sense of: The cover is intact and recognisably book-shaped. The binding is hanging in there like a mid-term government. The pages are all present, wearable, and have embraced a tasteful shade of academic yellow. Now, the fun bit: It has a significant amount of annotation inside , mostly concentrated around the interesting bits (which is? quite a lot of it). The notes are clearly the work of someone who took this play very seriously at some point ? probably just before an exam or just after an existential crisis. The comments are mostly helpful , in the sense that you can see they were trying very hard to be insightful. They are also, tragically, almost completely illegible . A storm of underlining, circling, arrows, and passionate scribbles that definitely mean something? to someone? somewhere? in another timeline. Think of it as a director?s commentary where the director has terrible handwriting and no sense of spacing. Why this is secretly brilliant You get a ready-made ?scholarly? copy without the actual danger of understanding what the previous owner thought. You can nod thoughtfully at the margins and murmur ?Ah, yes, dramatic irony,? safe in the knowledge that no one can prove you wrong. The annotations give the book instant theatre-studies chic: it looks heavily studied, deeply loved, and possibly lightly wept over. Perfect for students, teachers, or casual readers who like their tragedy served with a side of mysterious intellectual ghosts. Ideal for: People who enjoy plays where everyone is technically right and still everything goes horrifically wrong . Readers who like their moral dilemmas sharp and their dialogue sharper. Anyone who secretly enjoys the smell of old paper and the sight of frantic exam-revision notes by a stranger. Gift-givers who want to say, ?Here, have a classic? and also an unsolvable handwriting puzzle.? In summary This Good condition, heavily annotated but barely decipherable copy of Antigone (1970) by Jean Anouilh is: Dramatic, in content and in margins Philosophically intense, aesthetically chaotic And perfectly on-brand for Crappy Old Books , where every scribble is history, and every page has Opinions? Adopt it, read it, puzzle over the notes, and then proudly shelve it so visitors can think: ?Ah, a thoughtful person, and possibly a little bit dangerous.. …
