Item description from seller

Antique Chromolithograph of Naples and Mount Vesuvius with Bay Scene, ca. 1890 This luminous chromolithograph, titled "Neapel und der Vesuv" (Naples and Vesuvius), dates to around 1890 and vividly captures the iconic view of Naples and its harbor with the ever-present silhouette of Mount Vesuvius smoldering in the background. A masterful example of 19th-century chromolithographic printing, the image presents a harmonious blend of classical architecture, coastal life, and volcanic drama in one of the Mediterranean's most historically significant cities. In the foreground, fishermen in two rowing boats haul in their nets with practiced ease, surrounded by the calm, reflective waters of the Bay of Naples. Farther back, elegant sailing ships and smaller vessels dot the harbor, bringing activity and life to the maritime scene. The shoreline is lined with the distinctive buildings of Naples, including the Castel dell'Ovo and Castel Nuovo, whose stone ramparts and domes stand prominently against the pastel sky. Dominating the horizon is the brooding form of Mount Vesuvius, its crater emitting a plume of dark volcanic smoke. The presence of Vesuvius, an active volcano infamous for the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD, provides a dramatic counterbalance to the tranquil waterfront. The artist skillfully juxtaposes serenity and latent power, offering a romantic yet realistic impression of this famed location. The warm tones of the sky, which fade from pink to pale blue, suggest either a sunrise or sunset, adding atmosphere and depth to the composition. This type of print was often used in educational or travel publications during the late 19th century, appealing to armchair travelers and collectors fascinated by classical cities and natural wonders. Condition Report: Good condition. Colors are vivid and clean. A faint vertical crease is visible at the centerfold, typical of prints from bound volumes. Minor age-related toning in the margins, but no tears or repairs. Paper is stable and edges are well preserved. Framing Tips: To accentuate the Mediterranean palette, consider a warm wood frame?such as olivewood or cherry?or a classic gold-leaf finish. A light cream or sand-colored mat will enhance the pastel tones without overwhelming the print. Museum glass is advised to protect against fading and glare. This piece is ideal for Mediterranean-themed interiors, studies, or living spaces with coastal or historical decor influences.
