Item description from seller

First edition of this collection of medical aphorisms drawn from the teachings and writings of English physician Peter Mere Latham (1789–1875), collected and edited by noted American physician and medical historian William B. Bean. Latham was an influential nineteenth-century clinician associated with St. Bartholomew's Hospital and St. George's Hospital in London. His concise observations reflect a physician deeply concerned with careful bedside observation, diagnosis, prognosis, and the practical responsibilities of medical practice. Bean gathered these remarks from Latham's writings and teachings, preserving an engaging example of nineteenth-century clinical wisdom and medical thought. Published by Iowa City's Prairie Press in an attractive small-format edition, with title page printed in red and black and a frontispiece portrait of Latham. Condition: Very Good hardcover in Fair original dust jacket. Binding appears firm and interior pages are clean and well preserved with mild age-related toning. No significant markings observed in the pages examined. Dust jacket shows considerable age and wear, including toning and surface soiling, rubbing, multiple tears and chips along the edges and spine ends, a small area of loss/puncture to the spine, and more pronounced chipping and tearing at the head. Jacket remains substantially complete and clearly legible. Please see photographs for condition. Significance / Collector Appeal: An appealing association of medical history, clinical teaching, and fine-press publishing. Latham's aphoristic observations provide a concise window into nineteenth-century bedside medicine, while editor William B. Bean was himself an important physician, medical historian, and collector. Particularly suitable for collections devoted to the history of medicine, medical aphorisms, clinical diagnosis, medical humanities, and Prairie Press publications. Shipping / Returns: Carefully packed for secure shipment. Domestic and international shipping available. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks policies. SCI 3a.
