A propos de cet article

Arabic manuscript on burnished and watermarked European paper. Text written in thuluth script, 13 lines per page. Title pages illuminated with gold; all text pages ruled in gold. Marginal annotations in various hands throughout. Begins with a note attributed to al-??jj Mu??af? Efendi. 53 + 20 + 23 + 12 + 30 leaves. 6-1/8 x 4-1/4 inches. A richly adorned Ottoman manuscript containing a foundational collection of elementary Arabic grammar texts known collectively as Majm??at al-?arf. Included are the traditional sarf primers: al-Amthila, Bin?? al-Af??l, al-Maq??d, al-?Izz?, and Mar?? al-Arw?? These works introduce basic morphological concepts essential for the study of Arabic, covering the patterns and transformations of roots into various verb and noun forms. The manuscript opens with a personal note attributed to al-??jj Mu??af? Efendi, suggesting its early ownership and scholarly use. The science of ?arf, concerned with the internal structure and morphological changes of Arabic words, has been foundational to linguistic studies since the early Islamic period. It examines concepts such as verb conjugations, noun derivations, sound and weak verb patterns, and morphological irregularities like idgh?m, i?l?l, and ?adhf. Works like Ibn al-??jib's al-Sh?fiya, as well as anonymous texts like al-Amthila and al-Maq??d, became central curricula in Ottoman madrasas and remain influential today. This manuscript, copied on A.H. 25 ?afar 1203, most likely in Istanbul, is enhanced with detailed marginal notes and commentaries from multiple hands, demonstrating its extensive use as a study text. Its illuminated headings and gold-ruled pages reflect the Ottoman commitment to both scholarly precision and artistic beauty in educational manuscripts. Contemporary red leather with marbled paper onlays and fore-edge flap, marbled paper on inner covers. Very good Arabic manuscript on burnished and watermarked European paper. Text written in thuluth script, 13 lines per page. Title pages illuminated with gold; all text pages ruled in gold. Marginal annotations in various hands throughout. Begins with a note attributed to al-??jj Mu??af? Efendi. 53 + 20 + 23 + 12 + 30 leaves. 6-1/8 x 4-1/4 inches. …
