A propos de cet article
The 'Around the World Program' was a series of 64-page, stapled booklets, published under the auspices of the American Geographical Society between the late 1950s and mid to late 1960s, each covering a different country with all sorts of information on its history, culture and people. There were about 80 titles issued and they were available by subscription, coming at the rate of one per month. Children (and, I happen to know, adults too!) wrote in, or got their hands on a sample copy (usually the Italy volume), and signed up for the program. They were then sent generic boxes or slipcases or "pull-drawer album cases" in which to keep up to six booklets. As it was up to the subscriber which booklets she or he kept in any particular case, there will be numerous possible combinations for the contents of any one case. Each booklet was written by a member of the Society, or by a travel writer (or, on occasion, by a jobbing author; the 'Paraguay and Uruguay' volume, for example, was written by Helene Hanff of '84, Charing Cross Road' fame). The books were illustrated with two-color drawings and maps, and black & white photographs, and came with a folded sheet of 25 or so stamp-like color photographs which had to be torn apart, moistened on the back (like stamps used to be!) and affixed to the appropriate gaps in the book. The sheet also had a small sticker with the country name, and this was designed to be stuck onto the "spine" of the case to indicate which booklets it contained. The subscriber could also get a small, 'View-Master' type of stereo viewer and the books came with a 'Tru-Vue' film card, housed in an envelope, holding seven double images that could be inserted into the viewer to create "a three-dimensional travel treat". So, having covered the preliminaries, what do we have in this particular case? Well, there's 'Austria' by William W. Davenport; 'Bermuda' by Richard Joseph; 'Brazil' by Charles Wagley; 'Ceylon' by Lee Boltin; 'France' by Alice Taylor; and 'Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland' by Evelyn Irons. All volumes have the sheets of "stamps" intact and unused, and the 'Austria', 'Bermuda', 'Brazil' and 'Ceylon' volumes have the 'Tru-Vue' film card inserted. Apart from a bumped top corner on the 'Brazil' volume, all the booklets, film cards, and sheets of color photographs are in fine condition. The case is just slightly worn on its extremities, but is very good indeed. A lovely set.
