A propos de cet article

An Atlas of Tudor England and Wales: Forty Plates from John Speed's Pocket Atlas of 1627, Introduced and Described by E.G.R. Taylor — Reprint Edition Publication Harmondsworth, Penguin Books Ltd, 1953 Formatting Small 8vo, pp. 32, [40] plates. Condition Report Near Fine. The publisher's original illustrated boards remain remarkably clean and bright, exhibiting sharp corners and no significant edge-wear, having been safely preserved beneath the dust wrapper. The binding is decidedly tight and square, presenting a firm, unread text block. Internally, the pages and colour plates are crisp and entirely free from foxing or distracting blemishes, retaining excellent colour fidelity. The accompanying dust jacket displays only minor shelf-wear at the extremities and slight rubbing to the spine ends, presenting very handsomely overall within its protective archival sleeve. Catalogue Note This is a 1953 reprint of the original 1951 King Penguin edition (Number 61 in the acclaimed series), edited by N.B.L. Pevsner. The volume faithfully reproduces forty miniature county maps originally engraved for John Speed’s renowned Pocket Atlas of 1627, offering a brilliant window into Tudor cartography. While the 1951 first printing appears with some frequency on the open market, locating a tidy 1953 reprint with such a well-preserved dust jacket and a tight, unoxidised binding is becoming increasingly uncharacteristic. It stands as a lovely example of mid-century British book production and cartographic history. A charming and vividly illustrated homage to seventeenth-century cartography, this King Penguin volume resurrects forty exquisite plates from John Speed’s 1627 Pocket Atlas. Accompanied by E.G.R. Taylor’s illuminating introduction to Tudor geography and the individual counties, the book captures the political and physical landscape of Renaissance England and Wales. A delightful collectible for map enthusiasts and admirers of mid-century book design alike, it distils the grandeur of early British topography into a beautifully portable format.…
