- Livre 4 sur 4: The Pride Series
The Pride Series explores the identity of nations one country at a time, celebrating what makes each one unique while preserving the heritage that defines it. This volume turns to Australia: a vast island continent whose influence on the wider world has never matched its isolation, and whose story is one of the most dramatic in human history.
Australia's written story begins tens of thousands of years before its name appeared on any map. The ancient custodianship of First Nations peoples, sustaining the oldest continuous living culture on Earth across sixty-five thousand years, represents a profound connection to a demanding continent. The traditional knowledge and ecological management that governed Australian society for millennia were among the most sophisticated adaptations to an extreme environment in human history. When explorers and colonizers arrived to map the southern oceans, they found a landmass of breathtaking extremes that would soon be shaped by a turbulent global encounter.
Then came the British, who founded Sydney Cove as a penal colony and established a remote outpost of empire. Then the frontier wars, whose violent clashes and land dispossession dismantled Indigenous worlds with a systematic thoroughness that the continent had not previously experienced. Then the gold rushes, which brought a flood of global fortune-seekers and transformed a collection of isolated settlements into a booming, restless society. Then the bush legends and the birth of a radical labor movement, which forged a distinct national ethos amid drought and flooding rains. Then the world wars, where Australian soldiers bore immense sacrifices in the muddy trenches of the Western Front and across global theaters. Then the massive postwar immigration, which reinvented major urban centers into some of the most vibrant, multi-ethnic cities on the planet.
This book does not look away from any of it. The frontier conflicts and the dispossession of Indigenous populations are given their full context. The institutional fracture of the Stolen Generations and the structural gaps that persist today are documented without euphemism. The complexities of colonial governance, racial exclusion, and the intense pressures of managing an unforgiving ecosystem are acknowledged where they belong in the story. The economic reliance on mineral wealth and agricultural commodities, alongside the modern challenges of housing affordability and a changing climate, are examined alongside the genuine achievements of national growth.
But the full truth of Australian history is also this: that the country which endured all of the above is today one of the most prosperous, multi-ethnic democracies on earth, anchored by its federal political capital of Canberra rather than Sydney as many casually assume. Its scientists, from Howard Florey saving over a hundred million lives to innovators shaping global welfare, have transformed human health. Its unique wildlife, including the kangaroo and emu proudly featured on its national coat of arms, symbolizes a resilient natural heritage. Its diaspora and cultural footprint reach across the Indo-Pacific and beyond, while its ongoing, deeply contested journey toward truth and reconciliation reflects a society doing the difficult work of repair.
The pride documented in these pages is not the pride of a nation that has always had things easy. It is the pride of a nation that has had things very hard, and that has come through.
The Pride Series: because every country has earned its place in the human story.

**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies.
