Included in this book are four signed letters from the author, on blue "Ebury Azure Wove Bond" notepaper. Three are typed, one is hand-written, one is single page and three are double page, front and rear of paper used. They comprise a charming and in depth correspondance on the subject of writing novels, with humorous discussion concerning an epitaph, and de la Mare's response to the young lady's description of her efforts to become a writer of novels. de la Mare replied to the young lady's letter, then two years later replies again, stating that he discovered her letter in the pocket of an old jacket, wasn't sure if he'd replied, so replies again, this time differently concerning the same subject matter. The lady, Catriona Anderson Robertson, has an address in Inverness, a stamped and franked envelope contains the letters, and there is also a note from de la Mare's daughter Florence Thompson, stating that she is returning the letters, having copied them for her archive. The correspondance covers the period July 1939 to November 1944. The book has her ownername inscribed on the fly, dated July 1943, and the authorial poem is dated November 1944, so clearly she sent him the book for signing, at which time he not only signed it, but added an apparently unpublished extra stanza to the poem "Night" - which itself is the second to feature in the anthology. "That shining moon - watcher by the one faint star: Sure now I am, beyond the fear of change, The lovely in life is the familiar, Now only the lovlier for continuing strange. Walter de la Mare, with all good wishes, November 944. The letters are in well preserved clean condition, one with minor wear to a fold. The envelope has been carefully opened with flap intact. The postmark is faint but seems to be 11 Nov 1944, the letter, the final one, dated 10th Nov 1944. The book lacks the DJ, is the 2nd impression, and has moderate shelfwear, marks to boards and rounding of corners. Insides clean and sound. An amazing collection of personalised letters and poem that will form the cornerstone of any collection. Size: 8vo. N° de réf. du libraire L14522
