A propos de cet article

1p., with integral address leaf. Entered the mails with "Fort Leavenworth, Mo./June 14" datestamp and matching "X" rate handstamp. Letters by Forty-Niners going overland on the Oregon Trail are scarce, given the limited opportunities to send them. Evidently written to his brother-in-law and sister, the present letter was written from Fort Kearny in Nebraska (misattributed on the letter by the fort's previous name Fort Childs), and hand carried by military courier to For Leavenworth in Missouri, where it entered the mails for delivery to Illinois with 10 cents due. The brief letter begins addressing the recipient of the letter Thomas Keegan: "I have only a few words to say. The train are gone ahead. We are in first rate health. George S. Feak is our Captain. Dunham Maynard, Wade Clement, W. Eddy and family also Stirling from Reeds Grove are in our Company and are all well. We are about 800 miles on our Journey that is from Joliet from St. Louis 300." The letter continues below to his sister: "I am happy to tell you that we are all in first rate health and with no [unclear word] whatever. So far we are all in good spirits. I wrote to Washington. Give our respects to our friend." He adds in a postscipt: "I did not hear from P. Barrow [?] or Harry Wade. I could not find out whether they left home or not." For a letter with the same postmark of the same date, see Risvold 428 1p., with integral address leaf. Entered the mails with "Fort Leavenworth, Mo./June 14" datestamp and matching "X" rate handstamp.…
